IAAND Vision for the Future

An international nutrition and dietetics community that promotes health and well-being through food and nutrition

IAAND acts based on the following principles:

  • Create initiatives and respond to identified members’ professional needs
  • Foster global partnerships between members and between IAAND and external organizations to promote global health and well-being and eliminate all forms of malnutrition as defined by WHO. This definition of malnutrition refers to deficiencies, excesses or imbalances in a person’s intake of energy and/or nutrients. The term malnutrition covers 2 broad groups of conditions. One is ‘undernutrition’—which includes stunting (low height for age), wasting (low weight for height), underweight (low weight for age) and micronutrient deficiencies or insufficiencies (a lack of important vitamins and minerals). The other is overweight, obesity and diet-related noncommunicable diseases (such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and cancer).
  • Respect broad points of view, recognizing diversity as our strength, including environmental, economic, social, and cultural factors in the decision-making process to foster equity
  • Act ethically with accountability and commitment to excellence
  • Incorporate research, professional development, technology, and innovation to enhance international nutrition and dietetics practice
  • Support the nutrition and dietetics community to be recognized as the experts in food and nutrition
    Promote the use of published research and evidence-based nutrition practice decision-making
    Create a feeling of fellowship within IAAND members to form an engaged international nutrition and dietetics community

IAAND’s FOCUS AREAS 2022

  • Enhance member ability to promote equitable access to food, nutrition, and other lifestyle-related services
  • Promote healthful eating and physical activity to improve population health and wellness at all stages of life
  • Achieve access and utilization of nutrition services, particularly medical nutrition therapy, as pillars of health equity
  • Identify and treat all forms of malnutrition1
  • Demonstrate the impact of access to health equity and the effectiveness of nutrition and dietetics care
  • Position nutrition and dietetic practitioners as key players on the interdisciplinary team/healthcare system
  • Enhance member ability to promote equitable access to safe and nutritious food and water
  • Advance sustainable nutrition and resilient food systems
  • Establish infrastructure and resources to achieve optimal and sustainable IDEA outcomes
  • Increase recruitment, retention and completion of nutrition and dietetics education and leadership at all levels for underrepresented groups
  • Cultivate organizational and professional values of equity, respect, civility and anti-discrimination
  • Advance food and nutrition research, policy and practice through a holistic IDEA lens

IAAND’s Strategies 2022-2027

Communications and Advocacy
  • Advocate for international policies and programs by providing input to PIA that:
    • Reduce and eliminate nutrition and health disparities (e.g. WHO or FAO)
    • Increase nutrition security throughout the lifecycle (e.g. Codex Alimentarius)
    • Foster food system sustainability (e.g. WHO summit or international efforts)
  • Advance global influence through effective alliances ( among national and or regional dietetic associations through CRs and professional groups on focus area topics (INIS, Dietetic Practice audits, and member benefits, recruitment and other HOD issues)
  • Develop effective networking program that engages members in sharing solutions to common global issues
  • Revive our IAAND member interviews for website and promoting through social media
  • Develop larger presence /more engagement in social media (e.g. issue/question of month, feature dietitians/professionals in varied practice settings, branding IAAND and promoting website content)
  • Serve as a trusted resource and utilize all media outlets to educate and promote evidence-based practices and science-based resources for IAAND members
  • Leverage technology and data to accelerate growth and innovation (same as above).
Professional Development
  • Use the best available evidence as the basis for professional development programs on topics identified by IAAND members’ needs also with special focus on students
  • Engage IAAND members at all levels through recognition programs (e.g. dietitian of the year) and certificates of participation in CPE activities
  • Support continued international professional development through the e-Global Collaboration and Mentoring program
  • Collaborate in developing tools for practitioners that positively influence patient and client outcomes that highlights our unique diverse membership (e.g. Quick Guides, Country Information Sheets)
  • Promote interprofessional training and professional development opportunities through strategic partnerships
  • Support Academy global efforts in development, testing and dissemination of the Nutrition Care Process/Terminology and Nutrition Focused Physical Exam
  • Leverage technology and data to accelerate growth and innovation (Same as above).
Research
  • Advance evidence-based practice through webinars, presentations, town halls, affinity groups, and tools) with a focus on international or global efforts highlighting the four focus areas (wellbeing and prevention, Nutrition care and health systems, Nutrition security and food safety and diversity and include
  • Leverage retrospective and prospective research methodology to study the impact of access and care by nutrition care providers on nutrition and health outcomes and quality of life through topic selection for IAAND projects, and Foundation that focuses on diverse practitioners (e.g. dietitians in India Pakistan, or Philippines or Africa) – Dietetic practice audits and NCP research (INIS)**
  • Expand and advance globally the field of food and nutrition science (through professional development , E-Global collaboration and mentoring program, and networking, e.g. how issues have been addressed in diverse settings/countries)
  • Publicize opportunities for IAAND members to contribute to, support and publicize Academy positions and policy stances
  • Leverage technology and data to accelerate growth and innovation (e.g. using social media and telecommunications platforms)
Workforce Demand and Capacity
  • Supporting and providing input to Academy’s plan to build a global nutrition collaborative to accelerate progress in improving health
  • Increase the cultural humility1 of all IAAND members through training
  • Promote expansion of population and community nutrition programs and initiatives with a focus on social determinants of health (through sharing successful programs that address common global issues)
  • Through expanded and varied learning opportunities, promote leadership self-efficacy and instill behavioral leadership skills at all levels of practice competence, including for students
  • Leverage technology and data to accelerate growth and innovation (Same as above).
